Interesting facts-Statistics on Lost Baggage

This article about lost baggage IS a cautionary tale. Perhaps these statistics will act as a warning to split your clothes between two suitcases, especially if travelling with a family group.

I expect you know of someone who has lost baggage on a flight. The reason that we guess you know of a friend or relative who has lost a suitcase is that 1 in 100 people lose baggage. Here is a report by Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques', better known as SITA.

30 million pieces of airline luggage, approximately 1%, will go astray this year.

SITA who monitor baggage in over 200 countries, said virtually all missing bags would be returned to their owners within an average of 31 hours. However about 200,000 pieces (less than 1%) would never be found because they are lost or even stolen.

Francesco Violante, managing director of SITA said the air transport industry spent about $2.5 billion a year tracking and returning luggage. Part of this figure went on compensating passengers for lost items. More bags are going missing due to airport congestion, short transition times, and switches from one airline to another.

What are needed is better systems which can link bags to their owners.

SITA concluded that the number one cause of late-arriving bags was mishandling when luggage is transferred between flights. This accounted for 60% of hold-ups in 2005.

Secondly was failure to load bags at the departure point, this made up 15% of delays. Attaching the incorrect destination tags at check-in accounted for just 3 percent.

Amazing pictures-US Military tattoos

According to studies and polls, armed forces tattoos are the greatest in the Navy, with the Army second, the Marines third, and then the Air Force. The style of tattoo designs seems to differ depending on the specific branch of armed forces.

Tattoos in the US armed forces have a long and colorful tradition. The millions of Americans who have served either as active service personnel or reservists means a countless number of inked war veterans. Many of them have gotten tattoos as a constant reminder that they once belonged to a particular unit or platoon, to acknowledge their loyalty not only to their unit but also to their country, to show feelings of camaraderie they felt, or even to mark the loss of someone close to them.

Strange happenings-Land cruiser falls in deep well

You would think that they would at least put up a flag to let people know there's a 100 mt hole there. This happened in Saudi a few days ago. In areas where there is fresh water under ground, the locals dig wells and support the sides with concrete and stones to keep the sand from falling back in to the well. Some of these are up to 100 meters deep.

Amazing facts-Bee attracting competition

A"bee-attracting" competition in China 's Hunan province pitted two fearless bee keepers, Lu Kongjiang (above) and Wang Dalin against one another.

Wearing only a pair of shorts and with a queen bee they reared to attract the swarms, the competitors stood on a weighing scale so the judges could determine who attracted more bees.

The Guinness Book of Records has a category for "most pounds of bees worn on the body," reportedly held by US animal trainer Mark Biancaniello who attracted 39.5 kilos (87lb) of bees onto his body.

Mr. Wang won the competition after he attracted 26 kg (57lb) of bees onto his body in 60 minutes. His opponent was engulfed by a mere 22.9 kg (50lb), local media reported.
