Animal world-Tending to bears

Tending to bears

Ivan Leshenko, a 74 year old pensioner living in the Ussurisyk region of Russia's Far East, looks after 11 Himalayan bears with his wife, Luboy. BBC Russian went to see them to find out how they did it.

Ten years ago, the authorities in Ussuriysyk created a shelter for wounded or abandoned animals on the outskirts of Mr Leshenko's village. Now there are only few bears left, and the couple are the only ones looking after them.

Amazing happenings-Extreme Hail!

When nature decides to shoot it all to smithereens it uses giant ice bullets. Extreme hail is probably the most dangerous and life-threatening weather event for those unlucky enough to be in the open. It leaves fist-sized dents in the sheet metal, destroys windshields and comes down with a force that some compare with hand grenades, or an artillery attack.

Amazing facts-World's most expensive sheep sold

A six-month-old sheep need never worry again about being turned into lamb chops after being sold for a record-breaking £231,000.The Texel tup called Deveronvale Perfection became the most expensive sheep in the world after it was auctioned at a livestock market in Lanark. The pedigree ram was bred by Graham Morrison, of Banff, and bought by Fraserburgh farmer Jimmy Douglas.

Experts said that although the "staggering" sale price would take some by surprise, the purchase was likely to be an excellent investment.
John Yates, chief executive of the Texel Sheep Society, said the ram is expected to father pedigree lambs worth millions of pounds for his new owner.
He said: "High prices are of no surprise at a prestigious event like this, but the staggering amount that Deveronvale Perfection did go for surprised a lot of people.
"But the Texel breed is a great investment and these breeders, when they see an animal of Deveronvale's stature, they see the added value for future returns.
"A lot of people see these animals as lamb chops, but a lot of effort and dedication goes into developing these flocks, which are at the top of the genetic pile.

amazing-facts
"This was the elite animal which stood out, and I have no doubt, given the genetic superiority of the animal, that he will give Mr Douglas a good return."

Mr Yates said the previous UK record holder, Tophill Joe - another Texel - earned his owner £1m after being bought for £128,000 in 2004.The previous world record price for a sheep was set in Australia in 1989 when £205,000 was paid for a Merino tup.

Dark world-Gourmet restaurant in Africa

How a normal order goes down at Le Zoo Chez Felix, a restaurant in Abidjan, The Ivory Coast. As you can see in the photos, the food they serve here is very different than what we normally eat. They call it bushmeat, which is basically wild animal meat and apparently it’s a traditional part of their diet. We don’t see how cats can be categorized as wild animals.

Also on this bushmeat menu are crocodiles, snakes, different rodents and even the great apes. Actually the situation is pretty desperate on the black continent, with the bushmeat cuisine becoming very popular from The Ivory Coast in the west, to Kenya and Guinea in the east, several species face extinction (poaching is a very profitable there as you well know).

Amazing facts-Diamond studded car

Can anybody tell us what happens to cars like these after the show? Seriously, we can’t think of why someone would actually drive a car like this. Possibly it’s just a fashion statement that the creator never intended to see rolling up every Main Street in America.

“BLING”age is fashionable and goes with everything. But what will happen if diamonds are showered on the sophisticated Mercedes? In the month of May, we talked about the Diamond covered Mercedes SL Class. The idea may be unexplainable but the car it’s self is flawless, offering you a celebrity status. This Mercedes SL55 covered with diamonds (fake ones of course) was spotted at an overseas show. From a distance, it almost appears that the car is coated in glitter, but it is actually covered in diamonds. We had very little info on this car then but now we know that it’s a SL600. Every bit off this car is bedecked……even the exhaust pipe and the tire-plates are not spared.
